National Consumers League: LifeSmarts
LifeSmarts is a national program sponsored by the consumer advocacy group National Consumers League. The program is designed to encourage high school students to learn more about personal financial management, health and safety, the environment, technology and telecommunications, and consumer rights and responsibilities. After months of preparation, the participants have the chance see how much they have learned by participating in a series of game-show format competitions.
Lighthouse first became involved in this program in 2003 by providing coaches, curriculum and study sessions, and sponsoring a team of high school students. The hard work and dedication of the students and our employees were rewarded as the students advanced from the on-line competition to the state competition held during the Florida State Fair. During the state competition, the students advanced to the finals and eventually took second place after numerous rounds of head-to-head competition.
