TEAMS UNITE FOR THE INAUGURAL WALK AS ONE EVENT
TAMPA, Fla.- (October 6, 2003)-
Walkers from around the Tampa Bay area will "Walk as One" to demonstrate a unified commitment to a community that is inclusive, tolerant and just on Saturday, November 8, 2003, beginning at Lykes Gaslight Park in Tampa at 9 a.m. The event is sponsored by the City of Tampa and Lighthouse Credit Foundation.
Individuals, companies, organizations and community leaders are encouraged to follow the lead of the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) to promote respect and understanding among all people. The first annual NCCJ Walk As One will raise funds for the "Anytown" program.
Established in 1950, Anytown USA Residential Youth Leadership Programs are now held in over 40 cities throughout the country. High school-aged youth are prepared to enter diverse educational, work and living environments, not only to succeed, but also to excel and take on leadership roles. Anytown is recognized as one of the premier residential human relations and leadership programs for youth in America.
The mission of the NCCJ Tampa Bay's Anytown program is to empower diverse groups of young people to create more inclusive and just schools and communities, where individuals are treated with respect, understanding and dignity. By helping students understand and appreciate unique differences, as well as the commonalties among people, better and more able to assume leadership roles within society are created.
NCCJ Tampa Bay operates the most ambitious Anytown program in the country; conducting eight weeklong sessions per year at NO COST to participants. Anytown is offered to students in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties FREE OF CHARGE due to substantial school and community support. The Tampa Bay region has conducted Anytown in the Bay area since 1991. Since that time, over 3,000 students have completed the experience. NCCJ's goal is to keep the program FREE to all students but GROWTH is needed to allow higher numbers of students to participate.
"Walk As One" is a 5K walk beginning at Lykes Gaslight Park and proceeding down Bayshore Boulevard, sponsored by The City of Tampa and Lighthouse Credit Foundation. To register as an individual or team, log onto www.nccjtampabay.org or call the NCCJ office at (727) 568-9333 for more information.
