LOCAL STUDENTS WIN STATE AND ADVANCE TO NATIONAL LIFESMARTS COMPETITION
LARGO, Fla.- (February 23, 2005)-
After a day full of close competition, the Lighthouse Dream Team won first place in the 9th Annual "LifeSmarts The Ultimate Consumer Challenge" state competition by defeating lat year's state champion in the final match. The team will advance to the national "LifeSmarts" competition in San Francisco, Cal. on April 16-19, 2005. The Lighthouse Stealers also placed fourth in the state competition giving Lighthouse two teams in the top five. This is the second year Lighthouse Credit Foundation has participated in the competition.
The preliminary competition, which took place online, included 107 teams from Florida. The top 18 teams qualified for the state competition, which took place at the Florida State Fair on Monday and included six teams from Lighthouse Credit Foundation. Only the first place team would move on to win an all expense paid trip to the national competition.
The Lighthouse teams are comprised of students from Largo High School, Northeast High School and Gibbs High School. They were the only teams to be sponsored by a business in the state of Florida and the only teams to come from the Tampa Bay Area. The winning team members included team captain, Branka Kordic, Sylvia Dine, Chris Cullen, Ashli Levitz and Christopher Stansel. Terrie McGowan and Michelle Hunt, of Lighthouse Credit Foundation coached The Lighthouse Dream Team.
LifeSmarts "The Ultimate Consumer Challenge" is a national competition for students in grades 9 through 12. Florida is sponsored by the National Consumer League and the Florida Department of Agriculture. Similar to an academic bowl, teams of five students compete against each other by testing their knowledge and competition skills. However, unlike an academic bowl, LifeSmarts does not test their knowledge of Math, English, Science or Social Studies. Instead students are tested on their knowledge of life skills. The five categories covered are personal finance, technology, environment, health & safety and consumer rights and responsibilities. LifeSmarts helps build team leadership skills and is a great tool for college and scholarship applications.
Lighthouse Credit Foundation began coaching a team for LifeSmarts in 2003 and the team took second place at the state competition that year. Lighthouse feels the competition gives the company an opportunity to work hands-on with students, teach them how to manage money and stay out of debt.
"We are very proud of our students and their success, but eve more thrilled that we've been instrumental in teaching kids these important life skills," says Lighthouse Credit Foundation President Mary Melcer.
