LIGHTHOUSE CREDIT FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES CHARITABLE GIVING FOR 2003
LARGO, Fla.- (October 31, 2002)- Lighthouse Credit Foundation (LCF) today announced plans for its 2003 charitable giving. The plan announcement is part of an overall strategy developed by Mary Melcer, president of Lighthouse Credit Foundation, and a philanthropy committee made up of employees with an interest in community involvement. Melcer and the employees at Lighthouse Credit Foundation are hoping to inspire philanthropic efforts by other businesses, which might benefit the local community.
"Our hope is that because we have a sizable labor force, we can grow the seeds of philanthropy within our own ranks to encourage our employees to be active in thinking about how they can get involved in issues that are important to the overall wellness of our community," says Melcer. "Ideally, perhaps we can provide a model for other companies who want to create similar programs."
The philanthropy committee is comprised of staff members who take an active role in planning and making decisions regarding charitable projects and volunteer opportunities. Meetings are held regularly and an annual plan is established based on the vision of contributing to the overall effort of education in the area of personal finance and seeking out appropriate hands-on volunteer opportunities and/or in-kind support to local charities.
"Our events committee is deeply involved in the decision-making process regarding our charitable contributions and time," says LCF marketing coordinator Terrie McGowan. "Our committee looks to get involved with organizations that can use our professional knowledge of personal finance and also for organizations that are in need of our enthusiastic workforce - we enjoy reaching out and feel this option makes our employer a very attractive one overall."
"Efforts to provide information and classes on personal finance are important," says Melcer, because "we have amassed a great deal of information about the real need for people to understand how budgets work, why it is important, and even ways that people can minimize their potential risk when planning for things like the holidays or other events or catastrophes."
The LCF philanthropy plan calls for in-kind giving, financial commitments and commitments of time and expertise. All giving for 2003 will have as a cornerstone the opportunity to provide knowledge and learning geared to understanding personal finances. Since education is a key component of Melcer's strategy, many of the organizations benefiting will involve education to youths in primarily, but not limited to, Pinellas County. These include Boy Scouts of America, Boys & Girls Clubs of Pinellas County and the Pinellas & Hillsborough County Education Foundations. The programs created for each organization are the result of a collaborative effort between the LCF events committee and the executive staff.
LCF employees are expected to give over 1,000 hours in volunteer time and have "adopted" the Pinellas Boys and Girls Clubs Teen Center for the year 2003. Over the course of the year, LCF is also expected to give over $150,000 in financial contributions to the various organizations with which the company is involved.
